Persian is the official language of modern day Iran and parts of Afghanistan and the central Asian republic of Tajikstan, but it was a more widely understood language in the past. People in other Persian Gulf countries speak Persian. The difference between Dari Persian, which is spoken in Afghanistan, and Farsi, which is not, has been compared to the difference between European and Canadian French.

Persian is written in the Arabic script but is part of the European family of languages so it is easy to learn. It is very easy to understand in terms of formal language.
