The book is based on a conference hosted by the Zicklin School of Business in 2002. The edited transcripts of each panel as well as separate presentations by two distinguished industry officials were included in the text. The book isn’t just a historical record of the conference. An exposition of the complex issues raised by the industry experts and speakers in attendance is what it is. The final result would be a more valuable document because we introduced new material from interviews with many of the panelists. We wanted to examine the discussions with a critical eye, then modify or expand the sections to reflect current conditions. We included a paper by Ozenbas, Schwartz and Wood that provides further analysis on the connection between market quality and volatility that was noted several times during the conference. We worked with thePanelists and took pains not to say anything in their mouths. The final draft of the manuscript has been approved by all of them.
