Dr. Ken Long teaches five swing trading systems in the course.

Some of the systems are based on research done by analysts or traders while others are his own creations.

These are not conceptual strategies that should work in theory. These systems have proven to work in live trading. The five swing systems have some common elements.

The system works and how to execute it is explained by Dr. Long.

• The systems do not require a suspension of your beliefs or mental acrobatics to follow the rules – you understand why the price is expected to move and how the rules try to capture that move.

There are several simple rules for setup, entries, initial stops, and exits.

• No advanced degrees or advanced programming skills required to execute the rules; they are straightforward.

All of them have a positive expectancy.

• Traded by the rules, you can expect the systems to make money on average over the long run in the appropriate market types.

Some of the systems work in sideways and bear markets while others work in bull markets.

Two of the systems that work in bear markets are described by Dr. Long.

There is more detail on each system.

The first system is channeling.

The primary trend is pulled away from price on a regular basis. That means either a reversal or an opportunity to rejoin the trend with an attractive entry. A simple set of setup conditions, entry rules, and exit rules are what this system captures. As simple as the system appears, it produces great results. The bull market is the only system.

System 2: Overreaction.

The market will never react when it can overreact, according to Dr. Long. Regular opportunities for traders to profit from overreactions are available. There is a way to know if price moves are average or exceptional. A system built by Dr. Long reaps regular returns from the return to normal conditions. There are signals in both bull and bear markets from long and short positions.

System 3 is 5 days down.

Dr. Long came up with this system after reading a research paper that said stocks that have fallen for five or more days tend to bounce back. It worked because Dr. Long thought about how to systematize that idea. The washout system has a secondary and more reliable continuation trade, so this is really two systems rather than one. It only works in bull, sideways and bear markets. The system for bear markets is discussed by Dr. Long.

System 4: 552w.

One of Dr. Long’s students came up with the idea of combining three criteria. Dr. Long started trading it the next week after he liked the idea so much. Three consecutive setup from other systems build off each other for a highly reliable trade. It is simple to use and can be applied either mechanically or with trader discretion. Bull and sideways markets.

The system 5: washout.

There are important safety measures in place to ensure that you don’t get caught trying to catch a falling knife, but this system watches out for extreme overreactions measured on both a short-term and long-term basis. The system usually exits the trades in a couple of days and in many cases benefits from a follow-on or continuation trade. Bull, sideways, and bear markets. Dr. Long talks about a shorting variation for bear markets.

Multiple additional ideas and trading strategies are included in the system.

He talks about trading strategies, new system ideas, systems in the research stage, new production systems and the system development process in general. Part I Section 1, Baseline Lectures, is the first part.

In this series of four lectures, Dr. Long covers topics ranging from adult learning theory to his trading principles to market types. There are about two hours of streaming lectures.

Part I Section 2 deals with Channeling System and Overreaction System.

The first two trading systems are covered in nearly an hour and a half of lectures by Dr. Long. There are about a half dozen documents relating to this section available for download which include the written rules for each system and a number of case study setup charts or completed trade charts for each system.

Section 3, trading strategies, is part I.

During the two and a half hours of lectures in this section, Dr. Long discusses a number of important trading topics that relate to understanding system results and working to improve system performance in various ways. He gives interesting concepts as well as practical exercises.

Part I Section 4 is a bonus section.

Over the course of about ten years, Dr. Long evolved from a mechanical swing trader into a rule-based discretionary intraday trader. He uses many of the mechanical swing system setup signals in his day trades. He shares his knowledge of how to make day trades out of swing trade setups and convert them into swing trades for traders who are interested and able. He calls this process swing trading. Q. Do these systems work for investors outside the US?

A. Large-cap stocks and liquid Exchange Traded Funds are used in Dr. Long’s systems. The systems do not need to be the only instruments in the market in order to work. We don’t represent that or have data for confirmation, but we have reports from previous workshop students that the systems work for large-cap stocks in major European and Asian markets. If the edges the systems enjoy apply in other geographic markets or with other instruments, you will need to perform your own due diligence.

Q. I’ve never actively managed my investments. This course will tell me how to do it.

A. No. The course assumes that students have traded or understand how to accomplish a number of tasks related to active investing, though you don’t need to be highly experienced in trading to use the systems. Even though many experienced traders and money managers benefit from Dr. Long’s innovative thinking, we would probably label this course as an advanced beginner or intermediate trader level course. To be able to benefit from the course, someone would need to know how to buy and sell securities, how to use technical indicators, and understand a number of trading terms.
