Description
Art and Money – Chrls Guillebeau
- “it is not right to put an ad on your beauty. it is not healthy for everything to be for sale. this is a cultural sickness.” -kelly
- “I really never thought I would see ads on your Superhero Journal. I won’t read it anymore because I am tired and sickened by the selling of America. You can paint it and dress it in pearls but that’s what this is. ADS. Ads. ads. I feel so sad.” –penelope
- “i am opposed to advertising impacting every aspect of our existence and I wish more of us would keep boundaries around our creative space and say ‘this is not for sale!’” -katie
Someone compared him to a cocaine dealer and an email spammer. It reminded me of my favorite newspaper. The Onion. .
Is it as bad to put an ad on a website as it is to sell cocaine? The hyperbole of the internet seems to take over with some commenters, who don’t usually provide links to their own posts.
Most people are not that silly. Almost all of the people who commented on her post expressed their appreciation for all of the free inspiration she brings to her community. I have no doubt that she will benefit from the exchange more than if no one had complained.
Most of us focus on the complainers who want everyone to be average.
The person I talked to from San Diego mentioned the singer-songwriter who lives there. I said I like his music.
He said yes. He no longer plays coffee shops now that he is famous, so I don’t like him as much.
This kind of attitude is heard a lot about musicians. Dave Matthews doesn’t like it when he can afford to have a house and buy health insurance for his family. Before they started selling out arenas, they were cool, but now they are the band.
The funny thing is that if everyone hates the album, who is going to buy it? Hmm.
That is cool when you are a starving artist. When you become successful enough that more people want to see your art, you become the target of jealousy and resentment.
Some artists have a similar complex of their own that is holding them back.
I usually end up meeting artists whenever I travel, and I have noticed that some seem to have a fear of letting money come near their art. They think that selling something is the same as selling out. They worry that people will criticize them if they go commercial, and as we can see from their recent experience, they are probably right.
They are limiting themselves by not taking the next step in their art. The key to failure is trying to please everybody, said Bill Cosby once.
No one can complain about being 100% non-commercial because you work for free. You need to enter the marketplace.
My Cocaine Dealership is about to open.
I don’t think talking about art and money is a good idea. I won’t be putting ads on the site because that’s not my style, but I have no objection to people earning money from their art form.
I want to create a series with that in mind. Guides that are unconventional. There will be something for sale on the site. Specific topics related to Life, Work, and Travel will be covered in the guides. I will explain in the guides how I travel around the world, pay relatively little for airfare, earn money without a job, and so on.
I will show you how you can use the strategies to do whatever you want.
The first report is about something. There is a guide to discount airfare. On Wednesday morning, it will launch. I am pretty excited about it. In 31 pages of specific strategies and tactics, I will show you how to become a travel guru and save a lot of money on plane tickets.
A complete satisfaction guarantee, free updates for life, and coffee at Starbucks are included in the guide.
The coffee refill may not happen. Everything else will.
Some people will like this. I spend a lot of time writing when I get emails asking for this kind of information. There is a discount on airfare. There is a guide. To keep it as accessible as possible, I will price the guide a lot lower than market value, and I will be surveying the readers who purchase it to determine which guide I should write next.
It is a paid product so that those who can benefit from it will buy it, and those for whom it is not relevant can sit it out. No problem. I will make more of them if this guide is well-received, and maybe something else will be a better fit for you. Maybe not, but my writing on the site will always be free.
I could probably not convince them that I am as bad as a cocaine dealer for selling products that improve people’s lives.
I hope you like it. I will let you know more about the guide and an order link on Wednesday.

Lately I’ve had a lot of reasons to think about the relationship between Art and Money. There’s much to say about that subject, and we’ll cover it from different angles over the next few months. To kick off the series, here’s a quick story from the archives of unhappy people on the internet.
Andrea Scher writes over at , where she also sells homemade jewelry and does commercial photography. For five years and counting, she’s provided regular inspiration for a hyperactive community of women, fellow artists, and self-proclaimed superheroes.
So anyway, last week , and the new site will include a few spaces for sponsors in the right column. This is the normal protocol for full-time bloggers – build a community, write for free, and have some advertisers on the right-side that help pay the bills. That’s not my plan here, but I have no problem with people who do it that way.
No big deal, right? Well… in the comments section of an otherwise tame blog, a few people felt like the world had ended. Here’s what some of them had to say:
– After your purchase, you’ll see a View your orders link which goes to the Downloads page. Here, you can download all the files associated with your order.
– Downloads are available once your payment is confirmed, we’ll also send you a download notification email separate from any transaction notification emails you receive from nextskillup.com.
– Since it is a digital copy, our suggestion is to download and save it to your hard drive. In case the link is broken for any reason, please contact us and we will resend the new download link.
– If you cannot find the download link, please don’t worry about that. We will update and notify you as soon as possible at 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM (UTC 8).
