It is reflecting when you sit on the couch or go for a walk. That is reflecting when you let your mind wander.
Thinking is not the same. It is when you need a long time to think about a solution to a problem. To let your brain go at the problem at full speed, you need to be in a distraction free environment. It’s not doing a search on how to fix something. It is about coming up with a solution to your problem.
The problem you are facing is not a problem, but a symptom. This is something I will clarify with you on the next episode of The Productivity Show, which is coming out in about a month.
A lot of Asian Efficiency readers have problems with Procrastination. Even though they know they should be doing it, they can’t seem to get started. Have you ever been in that situation?
Procrastination and urgent need.
Procrastination is a symptom of the problem. It is the symptom of a lack of clarity. Procrastination rarely occurs when you have clarity around your goal and vision.
Lack of clarity is usually related to energy. This could be a problem with diet or sleeping. I once had a client who blamed his chronic Procrastination for missing his goals. Procrastination wasn’t the real problem as soon as he told me. I suspected that it was a symptom of something else.

Procrastination and getting easily distracted are the most common symptoms of not getting enough sleep.
He pushed back when I told him that we would work on his ritual. Why would I need to do this? This doesn’t help me get the work done.
He was willing to try it out after he explained the thinking behind it. He started sleeping on time after putting his evening ritual in place. He was a different man when I checked in with him.
Procrastination was no longer an issue. He had the energy to focus on the important things. We fixed the root problem but didn’t address the symptom.

It would have helped him if I had taught him the Eat That Frog tactic. The real problem wouldn’t be fixed by it. The solution was a band-aid.
As a teacher and coach, I will often give these solutions to people to give them momentum while we address the root problem at the same time. The real problem will be fixed by the end of it and new tools will be used whenever there is a symptom.
The quick tactics and techniques work. Whenever I need to get something done, I still use them. I will use one of the tactics outlined in the course as a band-aid.
I know that I either need to address the clarity around my work or look at what is wrong with my energy. If it happens more than 3 times. The 3 Times Rule will kick in when we teach in our courses. A sign of a systemic error is when something happens more than 3 times.
A lot of things you deal with on a daily basis are not really problems. They are symptoms. I was able to tell you that all the problems I thought were problems were not.
I feel like Neo in The Matrix now that I have this powerful tool. With clarity, I can see what is happening with other people and myself, and I can take a step back and analyze what is going forward. It is similar to being able to catch yourself on a cognitive bias before it derails you.
Reflection
Think again if you think you have a problem.
The problem with my MacBook Pro is that it is a symptom.
It is easy to come up with a solution once you have a clear idea of what the problem is. It is difficult to get to the real problem.

Here is what you can do.
Write down the problems you want to address. What is the cause of the symptom? You have to keep questioning the assumptions until you can no longer. The real problem is probably that. You will uncover a lot of things you have never thought of.
