Yoga’s Power to Detoxify
Omega Institute Forholistic Studies, a retreat center in Rhinebeck, NY, was visited recently by some members of the Body Ecology team.
While a healthy Body Ecology diet and lifestyle that includes pure water and plenty of sleep goes a long way toward natural detoxification, we all know that exercise is a major key to helping your body cleanse.

We went to experience yoga at Omega and not just any yoga. Seane Corn was going to teach a yoga workshop for us.

Seane was not kidding. Her program was challenging, fun, full of excellent twists and information about toxins, where they come from and how we can make simple changes in our lives to be toxin free was something we didn’t expect.
It was easy to breathe through the most challenging poses because of Seane’s guidance and gentle encouragement. We learned a lot from taking Seane’s class, even though we were all graduates of Donna Gates’ Body Ecology Detoxification Training.
Seane Corn has graced the covers of many magazines. There is a yoga journal. , The body has soul. And. Natural health. Magazines have known of her fame as a yoga teacher, but did you know she is also an activist for social and political change?
We met with Seane to learn more about why yoga is good for the body.

An Interview With Seane Corn
- Why is detoxification important and how has it benefited you?
- Back in the 50s and 60s, people didn’t understand toxicity. I didn’t “get” detox until I made the mind-body connection and realized that in order for it to be holistic, there had to be a physical and mental connection.
It gave me better skin and hair. I felt less bloated after I stopped being bloated. The immune system was stronger as well. My body doesn’t produce the same mucus as it used to, but I used to get bronchitis often. I feel better.
And I’m not the only one. Thousands of people have learned how beneficial detoxification is, which is why my Detox Flow® Yoga classes are incredibly popular. And with demand for this important program increasing, I decided to create a Det ox Flow® Yoga CD so that people at home could improve their health and reduce exposure to toxins as well.

- How did you get into yoga?
I started doing yoga in 1987 after working at the Life Café in New York.
The people around me were doing drugs. People were getting sick and addicted to me. I knew death was the only outcome. I wanted to practice yoga with the Life Cafe owners because they were both devoted to yoga. I learned the true value of yoga as a way to transform my life.
- You have a busy travel schedule. How do you stay healthy and happy when you’re traveling?
I am committed to what I do because it feeds and nurtures me. My interests and sense of stability are supported by the relationship.
My non-negotiables are yoga practice and being super-conscientious about diet. Being on the road is hardest. But if I don’t stay committed, I deplete myself. When I eat f oods with refined sugar I feel the effects quickly.
I travel with food and supplements. I check on Facebook to find out where the vegan restaurants are. I consult a spiritual counselor for emotional balance so I don’t allow the pressures and stress of life to affect my wellbeing.
Maintaining balance depends on diet. You are what you eat. I want to be present, open, connected, and focused.
- Why is diet so important, and what are some of your favorite eating tips?
I encourage people to look at diet more than how it serves and how it affects the environment.
Buy produce locally and support the farmers market. You can see how much water and energy your food uses.
Factory farming and the treatment of animals with chemicals are topics to learn more about. Use common sense, eat organic whole foods, and eat foods that your body can digest in proper order.
Understand what will affect your health. When your body feels better, you will be happy.
- Toxins aren’t just in the things we eat and the air we breathe. What else do we have to be conscious of?
You can release toxins if you move toward forgiveness and look at other places where there is an embodiment of poisons and judgment.
Emotions like anger, rage and unresolved grief are harmful to the body. The body and cells are vulnerable to disease because of their impact on immunity and hormones.
You can live more joyfully if you do deep emotional work.
- Tell us about your humanitarian work and how it affects you.
Since I have better tools to deal with conflict and stress, the next step was service.
I teach people how to find purpose in their local communities in places like Africa, India, and Cambodia. It’s not like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it I help people become leaders instead of waiting for them to show up. They are taking initiative. I use my platform to raise awareness about the importance of outreach. Human trafficking and HIV/AIDS are the major crises that I am working to change.
