A fight is not a marathon. Fights in the ring and cage are often paced by the fighters in accordance with their comfort level, because most people train at medium-to-low tempos. The intensity of a fight is usually not sustained on the street.
Being the guy who can control the pace is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Many people don’t take advantage of the fact that it’s one of the few factors that you can control about a fight. If you can work at higher rates than your opponent, then you will cause him trouble. If you can train your rate coding system for high intensity sustained effort at the same time that you train your fundamental skills, then you are going to be streets ahead of guys who separate their cardio. It is important to have a training method that teaches you to remain calm during the storm.
A very simple training method will give you the foundation for working at high intensity. I married the old Olympic punch-out to the Tabata protocol for a whole range of puproses, many of which aren’t obvious. A solo, personal practice that initially looks like an aerobic exercise but addresses a number of key elements that will improve your performance in training and fighting is called a solo, personal practice. It is very challenging, but the payoffs are good.
I teach this method to everyone who comes to me, whether in private lessons, group sessions, fighters or those concerned with personal protection. . It is the most important part of my training.
