Description
DANIEL GREENE, DONALD KNUTH – MATHEMATICS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ALGORITHMS
Some fundamental mathematical techniques are collected in this monograph. The more difficult notions are emphasized in the presentation of many of the major paradigms used in the precise analysis of algorithms. The authors cover recurrence relations, operator methods, and asymptotic analysis in a format that is concise enough for easy reference yet detailed enough for those with little background with the material.
DANIEL GREENE, DONALD KNUTH – MATHEMATICS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ALGORITHMS
The book is full of interesting things for both mathematicians and computer scientists. The MAA Reviews was written by Allen Stenger.
A variety of topics are covered in a relatively small amount of pages. Most of the topics are fully explained using detailed examples. The reviewer recommends this book to anyone interested in advanced theory of algorithms and the mathematics behind it, either as an exposition to the topic or as reference material in future work.
This book was written for an advanced course on the analysis of algorithms at Standard University, and the appendices list lectures, homework assignments and problems for the final exams with their solutions. The second author’s series The Art of Computer Programming is complemented by the collection of mathematical techniques in this book.
The mathematical tools used in computer science are covered in the book. The book is well written and covers a wide range of topics. The book’s style and exposition make it enjoyable to read.
The book presents a welcome selection and careful exposition of material that can be covered in a single course, and in this reviewer’s opinion, it would be an interesting text to use with a group of advanced students well-grounded in undergraduate mathematics and computer science.
Good things come in small packages. There is no more proof of the validity of that maxim than the work under review. In only 76 pages, the authors cover four important topics in algorithm analysis, all from a rudimentary, but highly original, point of view.
The point of view is Binomial Identities, Recurrence Relations, Operator Methods, and Asymptotic Analysis. The book under review should not be underestimated in its use of mathematics for the analysis of algorithms arising from computer science considerations.
The analysis of algorthms can be done on computer scientific ways. This book is a mathematical look at the topic. The Appendices contain further difficult problems for applying the methods of this outstanding, full-of-thoughts book.
FROM THE BACK COVER
An in-depth understanding of both mathematics and computer science is required for a quantitative study of the efficiency of computer methods. Many of the major paradigms used in the precise analysis of algorithms are presented in this monograph, emphasizing the more difficult notions. A format that is terse enough for easy reference yet detailed enough for those with little background is what the authors cover in the 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 888-666-1846 The majority of the book is devoted to original problems and solutions from the exams.
There is a very valuable collection of mathematical techniques.
