Since the emergence of PCs, Lotus 1-2-3, and Microsoft excel in the 1980’s, spreadsheet models have been the dominant vehicles for finance professionals in the business world to implement their financial knowledge. Most Corporate Finance textbooks rely on calculator as the primary tool and have little coverage of how to build spreadsheet models. The book fills that gap. Students are taught how to build financial models. It gives students step-by-step instructions so that they can build their own models. It goes from simple examples to practical applications. It covers all quantitative models in corporate finance.

WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK

My goal is not much more than that. Change finance education is based on spreadsheet modeling. It’s not like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it’s like it The change will prepare students for the 21. St. A century of business. The change will increase student satisfaction in the classroom by allowing more practical, real-world applications and by enabling a more hands-on, active learning approach.

THERE ARE MANY FEATURES WHICH DISTINGUISH THIS BOOK FROM ANYTHING ELSE ON THE MARKET:

  • Teach By Example.

Working through examples and completing a lot of problems is what I believe is the best way to learn spreadsheet modeling. The book develops a hands-on, active learning approach. Active learning increases student learning and student satisfaction with the course. Students get it when they build their own financial models. I tell my students that if they build it, they will learn.

  • Supplement For All Popular Corporate Finance Textbooks.

This book can be combined with a primary textbook. You can use whatever textbook you want. You don’t have to change. You can take anIncremental approach to incorporating spreadsheet modeling. You can build up from there. All popular corporate finance textbooks are compatible with alternative notation versions.

  • Plain Vanilla Excel.

There are books on the market that teach students how to program using VBA or macros. This book does everything in plain excel. Programming is disliked by the majority of students. Plain vanilla excel has the advantage of being easy to use and accessible to all. It is capable of handling a wide range of applications. Your students already know the basics of excel. Students are assumed to be able to copy formulas from one cell to another. Graphing, built-in functions, Solver, etc. are explained as they are used.

  • Build From Simple Examples To Practical, Real-World Applications.

The general approach is to start with a simple example and build up to a practical, real-world application. The previous spreadsheet model is carried forward in many chapters. The chapter on binomial option pricing has a single-period model with replicating portfolio and an eight-period model with risk-neutral probabilities. This book builds up practical applications using real data whenever possible. Practical applications that students can use in their future jobs are what they are excited to learn. Students with spreadsheet modeling skills can be more productive.

  • A Change In Content Too.

Spreadsheet modeling is more than just a new medium, it’s an opportunity to cover some unique content items which require computer support to be feasible. Corporate Financial Planning uses three years of historical data on Nike, Inc. to build a complete financial system, including linked financial ratios. The spreadsheet model in Life-Cycle Financial Planning includes a detailed treatment of federal and state tax schedules, social Security taxes and benefits, which allow the realistic exploration savings, retirement, and investments choices over a lifetime. You can see 30 years of US yield curve history in just a few minutes with the spreadsheet model in US Yield Curve Dynamics. For a fully general two-stage project with an arbitrary set of cash perpetuity, the spreadsheet model in Three Valuation Techniques demonstrates the equivalency of the Adjusted Present Value, Flows To Equity, and the Weighte9Average Cost of Capital methods. spreadsheet modeling is required for all of these applications.
