When day trading futures by using a personal computer first became possible, I rushed to buy one. Wow! No more weekly charting service, no more keeping everything up-to-date by drawing in the daily bars, and the wonder of being able to see what a chart actually looked like throughout the day! If I was wrong about the direction of prices while I was day trading, I could win a lot of money. I didn’t realize it at first, but I was quickly becoming a day trading junkie. I forgot about the rest of my life because I had so much time for other things. I wanted to sit in front of that screen and trade. Many of you know what I mean.

Due to a number of events that happened in my life a few years after this introduction to computerized day trading, I found myself teaching a retired medical doctor how to day trade futures. When this man was trying to day trade, he had no idea about markets, price action or day trading. I could not see a lot of indicators on his screen. There were red, white, green, brown, purple, pink, yellow, and orange lines on his computer screen.

Where are the prices? I asked. He said, Oh! I do not use them. When the green line crosses the orange line, I will buy the S&P.

I thought that he had to be kidding. Prices are the most important indicator in day trading futures. If it weren’t for prices, none of those lines would have been there. He was losing $30,000 a month.

I wondered why he didn’t know that prices are the alphabet of trading. I wanted to know which price patterns gave me the best chance of realizing a winning trade because the way I was taught to trade depended on price. If I didn’t give myself an advantage in the market, I would flip coin and say heads I go long, tails I go short.

Proper entry and timely exits are dependent on price. The most important skill in trade management is prices, they are the key to risk and money management, whether in day trading futures, or in daily trading.

It’s important to find markets and time frames that fit my personality and financial resources in day trading futures. I knew I had to look for the best trades. I developed methods for finding the trend and exploiting it while it was still in the birth canal, and I wanted to know and detect a trend while it was still in the birth canal. It would be easier for me to jump on other traders if I could detect a move out of congestion. I wanted to get the points across to the doctor.

I was taught to trade in contract sets, to take profits as soon as possible, and to leave some part of my position in case prices ran. I was taught how to turn day trades into position trades.

I kept a chart of every trade I made and kept a history of it, so I wanted to show it to the doctor.

I only had three days in which I could get across as much as possible, but I was restricted to the speed at which he could learn.

After three days of tutoring, I decided to write down all the important information about day trading futures, even though it was still fresh in my mind. There were over 300 pages when I finished.

I named it Trading by the Minute. Day Trading was renamed after a couple of revisions to keep the material up-to-date. Thousands of people have read either Trading by the Minute or Day Trading. It has become a collector’s item.
