Description
STEPHEN FOREST – THE INNER SKY. THE DYNAMIC NEW ASTROLOGY FOR EVERYONE
Thirty years ago this month. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. It was published. The most important event in my life was the book coming out. Everything changed from that moment onward. I never would have been able to enter the doors that opened for me. I have seen a lot of the world on the strength of that book. I have met many wonderful people. I have a nice home. I walked the Great Wall of China. I flew First Class to South America on a secret mission. I walked in the old harem of Topkapi in Istanbul and patted an animal in Australia.
I have not had a haircut for thirty years. No boss! No commute! There is only one necktie in my closet.
I have been able to live a meaningful life, one that I feel grateful for nearly every day. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. In August 1984 he was born into this world.
The story began in July 1981 for me. My phone rang. I was contacted by a young literary agent in New York who wanted to know if I would write a book for her. On the strength of a sample chapter, I was able to sign a deal with the biggest English-language publisher in the world. They paid me an advance and I began writing. There is a manual typewriter. I was older than 30 years old.
Since November 1977 I have been making my living as a full-time astrologer. My practice was successful. I was booked many months in advance. I quit my day job to work for the University. I had doubts about my direction in life. I had been thinking that you were going to be at this rate. Really old. Like. Forty. You can still be a hippie astrologer in the town where you went to college. I told myself that maybe you should go to graduate school. Get a haircut.
I love astrology. I will do this with my life. Before any book contract fell in my lap, I had crossed the Rubicon inside myself and committed to this path I have been on ever since.
The planets were transiting my sign. Time to figure out what myself meant, and time to be true to myself. I think I got that right. If you are true to your heart, magic will happen. Expect the unexpected is a good line, but hard to apply concretely! I followed my heart, committed to being an astrologer, no matter what kind of cul-de-sac that choice would plunge me, and the next thing that happened, that literary agent was ringing my phone, and I was signing a book contract with the biggest publisher.
That kind of miracle doesn’t happen. Common sense would suggest that. But it did. That is Uranian magic. . The universe will make a path for you if you follow your heart.
This pretty principle, which is very close to a cliché, absolutely will. Not. Always work for you! The timing needs to be right. It works in Uranian times. That kind of faith is what your soul is trying to internalize during a Uranian episode. You might be invited to learn patience and endurance in a different time period. You might be called upon to hold onto hope in a time of loss.
With a knowledge of astrology, we can at least know which bumper stickers will serve us best during a given period.
We can either say that I served or that the bumper sticker served me well. It is. What happens in our lives is based on how our consciousness interacts with a certain field of possibility. I could not ignore my heart. I could have chosen a different career path. Like the rest of us, I have messed up a lot in life and have learned a lot from it. I got it right in this case. The transit of Uranus changed my life. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. Into the world.
I wrote the book for three years. Peter Guzzardi was a great editor. He just finished editing a volume. A brief history of time. He got going on helping me. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. . Even though no one knew about it, the convergence of physics and metaphysics was one of the paradigm-changing dramas of our times. Who would have thought that? The inner sky is not visible from the ground. And. A brief history of time. Did anyone share any of their genes? I have never met Stephen Hawking, but the ley lines of our lives are entwined there.
We had a difficult time with the question of a title. I hated the project’s working title. It’s Astrology 101. Peter and I were on the phone trying to decide what to call the book. I blurted out the inner sky from somewhere in Neptune’s realm. Peter said yes. Yes! That is it! I was happy. That sounds similar, he said. Inner tennis. ! The book was on the top sellers list. He liked the subliminal market tie-in.
That was enough for me. I saved my book. Astrology 101 It would have greatly diminished my life, or at least my poetic pretensions.
When I received my author’s copy of the book, I opened it and pulled out my firstborn, only to gasp. Under the words. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. The big, bold, bone-white title of the marketing department was THE DYNAMIC NEW ASTROLOGY FOR EVERYONE.
This is the world of marketing.
The book sold 30,000 copies in the first couple of years and they offered me a contract on the follow-up volume. The sky is changing. . The reputation. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. Although real astrologers had some understandable attitude about popular astrology books, slowly penetrated the more serious world of astrology. Three years later, I received my first invitation to speak at a conference. It was a great experience for me. I think it was in New York City. Robert Hand was a legend in my mind when I climbed up on a stage with him. I will always be grateful to him for being gracious to me.
This was the first time in my life that I had met another astrologer. The Lord of Solitude is on the verge of the House of Career.
There was a double-edged sword to my lack of contact with astrological teachers. I missed the chance to sit at the feet of people who might have helped me when I re-invented the wheel many times. I developed a kind of astrology that was different from the mainstream. I think my isolation helped me more than it hurt me. The first words of the book. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. People change. Most astrological writing assumes that people do not change.
THAT STILL SAYS IT ALL.
The idea that our psychological and spiritual journeys are intertwined and that evolution occurs via wise choices we make over many lifetimes was the basis of my work with clients. The philosophy that underlies every word in is the one I cut my teeth on. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. . There are many instances of the term evolutionary astrology in the book. Bantam wanted me to soft-pedal the metaphysics, not to over-use the world. I think they underestimated the market. The soul-references are buried in the pages of the book, but maybe not as much as what I was saying to my clients at the time. I don’t regret it. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. It was always meant to be a primer that would reach out to a wide range of people and attract them to a more choice-centered kind of astrology. I have always looked at my most recent book. Yesterday was Sky. Picking up where it left off was the companion volume to the first one. As. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. There are psychological perspectives on our evolution. Yesterday was Sky. The focus is on the reincarnational perspectives. The soul of each book is between the lines in the other one.
A book is buried in stone once it is in print. That is the horror of it. You can’t take it back. I have been grateful to the gods and spirits for guiding my life. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. I would change it. It was all in my head when I was young.
I still believe in what I wrote in the Pluto section, but I think I could have done a better job with it. I tried to correct that in my 1994 volume. The book of a dwarf planet. .
If I could add more to what I already have. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. Even though that image works well, it would be a better metaphor for the meaning of the ascendant. After I finished the book and laid it to rest, I realized that the ascendant was better described as the stained glass through which the psyche shines into the world. stained glass does not hide the light shining through it. It filters it and gives it a tint. I could have made that clear.
Thank God, live and learn. There is always more to discover in astrology. You can see into astrology’s crystal ball when you discover about yourself.
Happy birthday to my firstborn child. People with kids seem to have a sense of where they are in life. Your kid’s hair is starting to gray and that is a bit of a problem for you. I forget my age because I have never had children. I look at the pages of that original mass market edition. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. I get a sense of time passing when a skinny young guy living in a three-room walk-up next to a gas station cranks out a manual typewriter. I feel proud. I feel grateful for the life I have been given and for the book that opened my eyes to a wider world.
The words that close are what I would like to close this little reminiscence with. The inner sky is not visible from the ground. . Thirty years down the road, I can’t improve on them.
Who are we? Who is observing?
The endless, impossible task that makes us human is the deepest riddle of them all.
It’s not possible for astrology to answer that question. Maybe it can make us a little more aware. We are the border dwellers in astrology. Waves of consciousness break on the rocks and dunes of the physical world when we live on the shoreline. Both are reflected in us.
The universe is what we are dreaming about in astrology.
