I’m going to tell you something you’ve always suspected.

I spoke at a large business-building event. The people in the audience scribbled the nuggets of wisdom they hoped would propel them to success as each speaker hit the stage. They heard how.

To build a devoted following, you need to use social media. To get your name out there, you have to write books. You have to use PR to get noticed. You need to make videos. If you don’t go through a step-by-step business building plan, you will fail. And so on…

The sense of desperation in the audience went up as each speaker left the stage.

Why?

They were unintentionally being led into traps.

The Pit of Passivity is the first rap number. When someone feels powerless, they experience themselves as passive. Even if I knew what to do, I wouldn’t be able to do it. When people have it, they tend to look outside themselves for help.

The person is sharing their knowledge with the best of their ability. They don’t put what they’re learning into action because they think the power is outside them. They think that it works for the expert, but there is something different about them. The actions don’t see the light of day.

Do you listen to an audio programme, read a book, or attend an event and not take action?

If you are like me, you have fallen into the pit of passivity more than once. It is not your fault. Being in the I can’t space was inevitable when you experienced it. Fortunately, there is a way to get out of this trap. But first…

Rap number 2 is called The illusion of the expert. Someone who has found a way to accomplish something that works for them is called the expert. They share what they did in good conscience because they know that if they did it, they would get the results they wanted. They are missing a crucial piece.

The expert came up with an approach that fits with their unique abilities, personality style, beliefs, and life. There is one problem.

You are not them! Their approach isn’t a good fit for your unique abilities, personality style, and life.

A: How many times have you heard someone share a guaranteed, step-by-step process, and then fail to take the steps?

If you are anything like me, you have done it many times. Again, it is not your fault. You were led to believe that the expert was correct. If you can use your own power and process, someone else’s process will work for you. There is an unexpected way out of this subtle trap.

Rap number 3 is called The Folly of Form over Substance. The experts at the event shared how they could use different forms to get out there and make a living. They weren’t talking about the most important thing.

I know many of the world’s Superstar NLPers, coaches, trainers and consultants. Many of them are close personal friends, mates who I hang around with, and they all share one thing in common.

They all know what they do. They do more than justNLP techniques, coach, train or consult. They awaken people to who they really are, and connect them to their purpose in life.

I asked the audience a question when I hit the stage.

It is this. Before someone is willing to pay you a handsome price for your skills, they have to know that you are going to get them the results they want.
