One of my favorite stories about this topic involves the legendary Betty Croker.

Betty Crocker Foods produced an instant cake-mix back in the 50’s. Adding water to the supplied powder was all you had to do.

It made it very easy for a Mom to bake a fresh cake for her family in a fraction of the time.

The miracle mixture did not sell.

Why?

The average American housewife felt that she was deceiving her family and friends when she said she had worked hard for them, when in fact she had done very little work. She thought it was too easy.

They made a small change to the recipe to get through the mental block. The customers had to add a real egg after the powdered egg was removed.

The customer was able to satisfy her guilt by complicating the process just a little bit.

The cake mix was a huge hit.
