I realized that this was not a game I could win.

I am talking about more than just squirreling away knowledge.

Today’s successful developer is a master at diving deep into a new piece of tech, slicing it into bite-sized chunks and absorbing the critical 20% that lets him work productive while other developers are still scratching their heads and searching Stack Overflow.

I did not always have this ability.

It felt like an endless trek to learn any new technology a few years ago.

Here is what I would do.

This whole process took a lot of time. I would spend weeks or months learning a new programming language.

I would find new rabbit trails that I hadn’t explored yet if I thought I had a good handle on the topic.

The goal posts were moving. The topic seemed to expand in all directions as I studied longer and harder.

I never got the satisfaction of being done, and eventually I would just get overwhelmed and move on to something else.

When I Tried To Apply What I’d “Learned”
I Couldn’t Remember Half Of It!

I assumed it was part of the process.

I made a discovery that changed the way I learn.

I took an online training course several years ago.

I was getting paid to teach about software development.

Pretty soon, though, I hit a little snag… I didn’t have enough things to teach. .

I thought I would do a course on that after seeing Go.

This Go course felt like slamming into a brick wall after I finished my courses on several languages and platforms.

I realized how inefficient and painful my way of learning was. I spent weeks creating a single course.

My approach to learning was not going to help. I had to adapt quickly.

My eyes bled and my brain begged for mercy as I stopped trying to brute- force the information into my brain.

I took charge of my own learning and didn’t allow book authors or other experts to push their preconceived ideas on me.

I found a way to get down to the bare essentials that would give me a Knowledge in the shortest time possible is productive. .

It took four weeks to create that Go course.

I was able to produce courses in three weeks thanks to the discoveries I made.

I was teaching a new course every few days.

I’d cut my study Less than a third of what it was. . And what really surprised me was this:

This caught me off guard.

There are always tradeoffs in life, and my motto is that nothing is free. The tradeoff for rapid learning is a shallow understanding and less ability to apply what you have learned.

It is the opposite.

My ability to apply information went through the roof as I improved my learning efficiency.

I wasn’tcluttering my brain with trivial details. I locked the knowledge into my long-term memory when I zeroed in on the key concepts.

I didn’t need to relearn the basics over and over again because I was learning 3X faster.
