Humans have all the attention of a goldfish, which is about 8 seconds. Getting the attention of busy people is one of the hardest jobs in business, even though I am not a math guy. It doesn’t matter if you’re a billion dollar giant or a sole proprietor. You might as well be invisible if you can’t get people to notice you.

The funnel is wider at the top than it is at the bottom. There are more people coming into your funnel than taking action. The way to look at it is that attention is opening the sale and action is closing it. Here the Sale could be opting in to an email list, making a phone call, redeeming a coupon, donating to charity, or buying something. The sales cycle could be an instant or even a year. Signing a contract for a multi-million dollar enterprise software application is much more complex than buying a bag of potato chips for 50% off.

You don’t have to work very hard to get attention if you’re a well-known celebrity. Imagine if Julia told the press that she was conducting acting classes or if Tiger sent out a twit that he was giving private golf lessons. A lot of people are going to pay attention when they hear about these offers. People listen to people with visibility and credibility.

People like you and me are unknown to the larger audience we want to attract. Word of Mouth Marketing is not enough to build a predictable andScalable business.

Our job may be harder than others, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be successful. We all know of people who have come out of nowhere and become household names. They were unknowns when they got their break on talent shows.

We are bombarded with noise everywhere we go, and it is only getting worse.

We live in an arms race for attention. We only have so much attention in our lives that we have to fight harder to get it. We forget to leave because YouTube plays more videos. We keep an eye on the photo sharing website because it shows new likes one at a time. Whether it is true or not, Facebook keeps us on screen. Everything is turned into breaking news by the news media.

It is hard to get attention in an age of overwhelm.

A lot of people think shouting louder than the next person is the key to success. It might work for a hungry baby who can only communicate by screaming at the top of his or her lungs. An adult who shouts is considered a pest. This is how you can be successful. Love em or hate em, there are people who take pride in being offensive, but also alienating entire segments of the population. I don’t think you want to do that.

There is a better way to go.

A system based on human nature, not hacks and tricks that will be obsolete as soon as the next Facebook algorithm comes along, is what I have found. A system that is pleasant to be around. You can turn predictable behavior into predictable cash with a system that takes advantage of human responses.
