A Research Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, and an eDiscovery attorney and consultant in Buffalo, New, as well as an affiliate faculty member of the Vector Institute, all in Ontario, Canada, are some of For 17 years, she was counsel at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, where she represented Fortune 100 companies and major financial institutions in civil litigation and white collar criminal and regulatory investigations, and advised the firm’s lawyers and clients on legal, technical, and strategic issues.
A well-known and influential eDiscovery expert is Maura. According to her peers and Chambers & Partners USA Litigation: E-Discovery, she is the best-known person in the area. The work on Technology-Assisted Review in E-Discovery can be more effective and more efficient than Exhaustive Manual Review was published in theRichmond Journal of Law & Technology in 2011. The February 2016 issue of The American Lawyer featured her contributions to eDiscovery technology and the September 2016 ABA Journal featured her as a Legal Rebel. In addition to being added to the ABA’s list of Women in Legal Tech, she was also named to the Fastcase50 list and honored by the Association. One of the women who have served as pioneers and innovators in eDiscovery and legal technology is ‘WiE’.
In high-profile federal and state court cases, she has been a court-appointed special master, mediator, and expert. She has testified before the Advisory Committees on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Evidence Rules and provided eDiscovery training to federal and state court judges. At Columbia, Georgetown, and Rutgers–Newark law schools, she has taught more than a dozen courses on eDiscovery.
She was a member of the Steering Committee of The Sedona Conference Working Group 1 on Best Practices for Electronic Document Retention and Production from 2012 to 2018, as well as a member of the Seventh Circuit Council on Electronic Discovery and Digital Information. Since 2008, she has been involved in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Text Retrieval Conference, as well as the Legal Track and the Total Recall Track. The Electronic Discovery Reference Model, the Georgetown Advanced eDiscovery Institute, and the Arizona State University-Arkfeld eDiscovery and Digital Evidence Conference are some of the organizations she serves on.
She received an A.B., magna cum laude, from Brown University. She received her M.A. and J.D. degrees from the Georgetown University Law Center. Maura was the Executive Notes and Comments Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal.
