Millions of Americans are overweight or obese. Nearly all regain weight within five years, even though medication and psychotherapy may result in modest weight loss. There is a missing ingredient for successful treatment. To make permanent changes in their eating behavior and thus their weight, individuals must learn how to cope with a sense of unfairness, deprivation, and dis-couragement. Cognitive behavioral approaches have been shown to work.

The educational objectives are listed.

1. To identify dysfunctional cognitions underlying poor eating habits.
2. To list two ways to help clients respond effectively when psychological issues that interfere with weight loss arise.
