Salvador Minuchin is a doctor. Structural Family Therapy addresses problems within a family by looking at the relationships between family members. He worked at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic. The Clinic grew to become one of the most respected child guidance facilities in the world despite being minimally staffed when he began. Minuchin started a family therapy center in New York. In 1996, the center was renamed the Minuchin Center. The author of many notable books is Dr. Minuchin. He has a new book called Mastering Family Therapy: Journeys of Growth and Transformation. In 2007, a survey of 2,600 practitioners named Minuchin as one of the ten most influential therapists of the past 25 years.

Carl Whitaker, MD, was an American physician and psychotherapy pioneer family therapist. The entire family is acknowledged in the therapeutic process. Experiential family therapy was founded by him. Experiential family therapy looks at the entire family system rather than just one family member. Several approaches to family therapy are based on the theories of Whitaker.
