Dr. Jelen was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. While working in his father’s pharmacy, he became interested in science and medicine. He obtained his undergraduate degree in general science from Loras College in Iowa, his master’s degree in human anatomy from Wright State University in Dayton, OH, and his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens. The Red Cross Tissue Bank in St. Paul, Minnesota employed Dr. Jelen as a surgical technician and program director.
