• Study nature mystics, such as Hildegard of Bingen and Francis of Assisi
• Discern the social and/or environmental issue that concerns you most and make a practical decision to contribute to its alleviation
• Explore the role of the prophet in our times

The path is characterized by paradoxes. In order to evoke the way in which the soul yearns for and connects with the sacred, mystics have borrowed the language of romantic love. We experience a mixture of awe and intimacy in the light of love. There is no one left to experience the merging because of the mystical union dissolving the separation between lover and Beloved. The Holy One is not limited to form or expression.

The word is Hebrew. teshuvah Means to return. The infinite lovingkindness of theDivine who meets us with open arms when we take responsibility for our negative actions is invoked. Jews, Christians and Muslims hold compassion as the highest ideal, not only with regard to how we are meant to treat others but also as a reflection of the love in which the Holy One enfolds us. We cultivate the courage to forgive and the vulnerability to be forgiven when we draw on this quality.

Many contemporary spiritual seekers abandoned their Judeo-Christian roots in search of Eastern meditation practices only to discover that the religions they grew up with contain a rich contemplative tradition. Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders are trying to be more relevant to their congregation. The monotheistic faiths teach us to cultivate a personal relationship with the sacred in silence and stillness.

We are the ones who have been waiting for the prophetic task. We have a responsibility to repair the broken world. A true contemplative does not look serenely from behind a veil. The protective covering around the ego has slipped or been stripped away, which is a distinguishing mark on the path. She can’t help but respond to the cries of the world because she recognizes her interconnectedness with all beings.
