In this activity, food insecurity will be discussed. Physicians will learn how to access patients’ health conditions and how to determine if healthy food is a viable option for treating them.

Learning Objectives There is a difference between hunger and food insufficiency. There are correlations of food insecurity in a patient population. The health care system is affected by food insecurity. Hunger Vital Signs is a food security screening tool. There are applications to patient care. Barriers to implementation are explored. There are steps you can take to develop a food insecurity model.

There are accreditation statements. The American Osteopathic Association gives accreditation to the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. MAOPS designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits, which will be reported with the extent of the physician’s participation.

This live activity is designated for a maximum of 1 by the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. The category is called the AMA PRA. ä . Physicians should only claim the credit when they are involved in the activity.

Karissa was born and raised in Saint Joseph, Missouri, where she was passionate about people and their care from a young age. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City after spending most of her undergraduate career at the University of Denver. She received her DO degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

She is a Chief Resident at Cox Family Medicine Residency. She lives in Missouri with her husband and their dog. Spending time with friends and family and good food are some of her other interests.

She is passionate about preventative health care, access to quality food, and addressing barriers to care. Mental health in primary care is something she is interested in.

Over the past 18 months, she has developed a system-wide food insecurity screening initiative, which has opened the doors to much learning, relationship-building, and the development of new community resources.

There are no relevant financial relationships with any organization producing, marketing, reselling, or distributing health care goods or services relative to the content of her presentation.
