I am busy! I don’t have time to think about training or eating. I need a program that will allow me to enjoy myself. It works with my busy lifestyle.

I know how you feel because I have been there. What did I get for being a health obsessed, carbophobic workout junky? A 40 inch waist and 30 extra pounds.

I worked weekends as a bartender and personal trainer while I was a medical student.

I worked until four o’clock in the morning on Friday. I would sleep for two hours and then work a twelve-hour personal training shift on Saturday before going back to the bar at 4am.

I would go through a week of full-time classes before repeating my ferocious weekend schedule.

I was training 5 to 6 days per week with high intensity interval workouts and heavy weight training.

Have you ever forced yourself to go to the gym and then trained like a madman, only to feel fatigued so much it hurt your bones? That was me.

Metabolism is damaged.

I went from a lean 215 pounds to close to 250 pounds after living this schedule for nine months. Most of the weight came on in 3 months.

I was training and building muscle, but most of the extra weight was fat.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid, adrenal fatigue, and a severe deficiency of vitamin D. My testosterone levels were in the toilet when I was in my thirties.

After that, I started taking care of myself. I stopped working on Friday night. I stopped doing personal training. I doubled down on my attempts to stop eating pizza and burgers.

I began to get healthy and lean again.

I should have realized that it wasn’t what was required. It’s possible that white knuckling my way through results made me worse.

As you read, you will learn why. The secret to doing it the right way is going to be learned by you.

I was back to late nights and crazy hours trying to run a clinic, write a book and build an online business after several years. I ballooned back up to 250 pounds and felt worse than before.

All of this is still being trained. My knowledge of diet and exercise was even more advanced. I was teaching physicians and personal trainers how to use the same techniques to get amazing results.

I had to learn the hard way. There were pieces that weren’t in the puzzle. I didn’t see it at the time, but I and other hard working business types didn’t fare well with this style of training. It caught up with us.

I asked myself a question. I wondered if the way I was exercising and eating was part of the problem. Was there a better way to go?

The banana effect.

I wondered if I was doing everything right. Why am I regaining this weight again?

The approach I was taking eventually led to a binge of some sort.

If I stayed away from bananas because they had too many calories, I would end up gorging on a burger and cheesecake binge a couple days later.

I named it after seeing it play out in patient after patient. The banana effect is what I have come to call it. Men get it bad.

There was a reason I couldn’t stay disciplined.

I followed a paleo diet and kept eating clean. I kept working out even though I didn’t have much motivation.

I used to pride myself on the fact that I did the hardest workouts out of anyone I knew. I used to do a workout called The Monster Workout that involved doing 4 rounds as fast as possible of 10 rep max on squat, bench, and power clean.

This would be brutal if you had ever done a workout using true 10 rep max weight.

It took me a month to recover from that workout. I had no motivation to train for weeks after being in bed for two days with the worst fatigue.

My energy and motivation would be affected by these types of workouts. I dread going to the gym the next day because I train so hard.

It was similar to the banana effect.

I was once again fat and fatigued.

Staring me in the face was the solution.

I would love to tell you that things started to turn around right away, but I had more than one start-over in my thirties. You know what a start-over is.

Is there a situation where you tell yourself you will start-over on Monday? I was doing that.

I wasn’t expecting these start-overs to turn into something. I would eat clean during the week and be incredibly disciplined and then on the weekend I would eat double the calories I consumed during the week.

I was not feeling well. My workouts didn’t go well because I was in a coma. You feel ok when you eat like that, but not so good the next day.

But then something happened. I was busy one week. I did a lot of cardio during the week. I didn’t have time to train.

I used to train during the week and travel on the weekend. I did almost the exact opposite this week. I hit the weights hard over the weekend.

Almost immediately, something magical happened.

I used to feel a surge of energy in my body when I worked out. I completed the workouts with intensity because I felt strong.

It had been a long time since I felt that kind of energy. I had it this weekend. The weight room was where I crushed it.

Feed The Lean and Starve The Fat.

I decided to try it again the next week after it made such an impact on me. I remember when I was younger, many people would use a similar approach.

They would take a few weeks and focus on cutting calories and doing more exercise. This was the cutting phase.

They would spend several weeks in a bulking phase. This meant a lot of eating and lifting.

The cutting/bulking cycle was shortened to one week in this new approach. I would eat a lot and train a lot on the weekend.

It worked well. If I was busy, I would use this to my advantage and take a week or two off from intense exercise. Opting for something called ELEL, which means eat less and exercise less.

I was able to start to train like I did when I was younger by learning how to cycle my diet. I could make a difference in the gym. It added muscle and burned fat off my body at the same time, something that is incredibly difficult to do.

I started using the same approach on my male clients. The approach had the same effect. They started to look better almost immediately after training harder.

Busy executives who traveled during the week thrived on it.

Old habits die hard and I would frequently deviate from this magic mixture of training and eating. I began to feel tired and heavy brain fog whenever I overtrained. Almost overnight, the weight would come on again.

Take a look at some recent pictures. These were taken over a year apart. The picture on the right was taken after two years of stress and training.

The picture on the right was taken after a period of de-stressing my system, and then moving back into a cycling diet.

The beauty of cycling the diet is that it is done in this way. I would eat the things I wanted to eat. I would do it when I was training the hardest. I would take a break.

I was doing things the same way. I didn’t want to stress about food or workouts during the week because I was busy. I wanted to eat and drink on the weekend, so I went to the gym. It was a win-win situation.

The final approach was to change the protocol to fit someone’s needs. I came up with a solution that was simple, understandable and doable after I solved this issue for myself and worked with many others.

The male’s metabolism.
