A native of San Antonio, Dr. Saenz received his medical education at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his training in Family Practice and Sports Medicine in Phoenix, AZ. He was the first Primary Care Sports Medicine specialist in San Antonio.
He is the founding partner of Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio, which is considered to be the pre-eminent provider of orthopedic and athletic medicine services. An Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio Medical School and the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Saenz is board certified in both Family Practice and Sports Medicine. He is an instructor at the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Saenz is a team physician for the NBA San Antonio Spurs, the San Antonio Missions Double A Baseball Club, The University of the Incarnate Word, and several San Antonio area high schools. He was part of the medical staff for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York City. He was a team physician for the USA at the Athens Olympics. In 2010, Dr. Saenz was voted one of the top doctors in Texas by Texas Monthly Magazine. At the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, Dr. Saenz was the team physician for the USA Track and Field team. He was part of the team that won the gold medal in the Pre-Olympic competition in Manchester, England and Barcelona, Spain. The National Hispanic Heritage Hall of Honor in August of 2015 inducted Dr. Saenz for his record of achievement and excellence in the area of athletics and education. Dr. Saenz is active in the education of medical professionals by speaking on a variety of sports medicine topics.

He was in the private practice of Radiology in San Antonio for 20 years. The Patient Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and empowering patients and caregivers to better navigate the healthcare system. The Patient Institute is chaired by Dr Ratner. At UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Ratner was the Clinical Professor and the deputy chair for strategic development in the Department of Radiology. Dr. Ratner is a pilot, cyclist and computer guy. He and his amazing and beautiful wife, Varda, have two children and would be considered empty nesters but for their small army of loving and spoiled pets.
