While training in Russia, I was exposed to exercises intended to strengthen the body, but transform special forces soldiers and cosmonauts so that their minds and bodies could not merely resist stress, but actually utilize the cocktails of cortisol, norepinephrine and the rest as sheer power.
The attempt to organize those pieces into a program for the average person has been made from the beginning. It was constant experimentation, integration, and re-invention, again and again, with that one goal: taking everything that I had created from childhood, everything I had learned in twenty-five years of blood. Steven Barnes was an amazing guy. Steven was a world-famous writer, a New York Times bestseller, and a Master Hypnotist. He was a columnist for Black Belt Magazine and lectured at UCLA. He was a yoga instructor and had three black belts, which made him fall in love with CST instantly. Steve earned a coaching credentials under me. He and his daughter were charged by an elephant on the lip of a crater in Africa.

Steve encouraged me to simplify. When we thought we were ready, we looked for the ultimate challenge of mind and body, something that would once and for all burn away, and only if I felt in my heart that I would trust my own family, my own children, brothers and sisters with this information. The scientific method requires that you formulate a hypothesis and perform an experiment to test it. I told Steve that I wanted him to be my mental conditioning coach. He wanted to know why. Why did I want to take that risk? He needed to be sure that it wasn’t just ego. I told him that I wanted to show what free people can do. I wanted to be an ambassador of possibility and sportsmanship. I wanted to have the perfect fight to dance in the midst of the tumult.
Steve smiled and said yes. That is the correct answer. He worked on my goals, values, beliefs, and emotions for ten months. Everything was All Systems Go and I was certain that I was aligned with my wife and business partner.
To focus on a single technique was the plan. I would use that technique against them. To tire my opponents out, to disrupt their rhythms so I could use it, to open lines of attack, and so on.
I would take them down or knock them out if they defended against it. The alpha and the Omega was the single technique. The roads led from there. I had used this method since I was a child. It works for both adults and children, and Steve just used it to coach his six year old son to a string of victories.
We needed more. The degree to which a goal is useful is connected to it.
Our beliefs and values are aligned with the goal. We can do it at the rate of just 1% per week. At the level of unconscious competence, the goal is anchored into the mind.
To burn those goals deep, deep into the brain, you have to couple them to high-energy states. Most seminars do this by getting you to jump up and down, scream and shout, or something similar.
