Description
Herman Suwanda – Pencak Silat Mande Muda
HERMAN SUWANDA – PENCAK SILAT MANDE MUDA
The Mande Muda self defense system was started in 1951 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. This was not open to the public. Pak Uyuh studied 17 different styles. He added Cimande when he married Rukimi. They taught their system to their family and friends.
The word Mande comes from the Sanskrit word for Cimande, which is believed to be the original system of West Java. Muda means young or new. Mande Muda is like a young child looking for new material. In this way, pak Uyuh believed that there were no techniques which would work in all attacks. To find the best answers to attacks and ways to prevent attack, he continuously studied pencak Silat techniques and weapons. The 18 Silat styles are combined in an effective system which is unique and rich in knowledge.
Constantly developing and practicing is the main principle of Mande Muda. Your growth and study can only be stopped by death. Pak Uyuh believed that by waiting, you can answer the question posed by the attack. If someone attacks you, give him the best answer that will prevent him from attacking again.
My father knew a lot about the traditional cultural beliefs of West Java. He planted in his children his love of the traditional ways and his determination to preserve them. He told us that Mande Muda must not die. The leader of the family system must be replaced when he dies. Mande Muda is still alive because of the spirit and principles that he gave us.
Ibu Suwanda was our mother. She had to be a strong woman to take care of 14 children and keep our family together. She came from a village. Her father was a freedom fighter against colonization and was from the Cimande family.
Cimande theory is as simple as hit and block. Most of the Indonesian men and women family of Cimande hide what they know from the public. They would deny any knowledge of Cimande if you asked them.
Being respectful and humble is part of being in good standing with the community. We don’t have to prove what we know because it’s part of our daily life. If you go to Cimande, you won’t find people looking and talking like they know how to fight, but rather like everyday people working together to survive and live ordinary lives. They share their knowledge with their family and neighbors in the village.
The matriarch of the Mande Muda family died at the age of 100.
Herman Suwanda is the Pendekar guru. ,
The second leader of Pencak Silat Mande Muda was my brother. In 1960, he began to study pencak silat. He continued to study until his death, after he began to study with pendekars from other traditional pencak Silat schools. He began teaching in Indonesia in 1974 and traveled to the US to teach in 1980. He taught Pencak Silat Mande Muda seminars around the world, as well as supervising the schools in Indonesia. He wanted to fulfill his father’s dream of building a school so that students wouldn’t have to practice outside or in the living room.
Pencak Silat was only taught to family members and close friends as it was traditionally oriented around the family. Since it was small, only a few students could learn at one time, and our family only taught in our living room. My father talked about the need for a bigger school. Mande Muda expanded around the world, first in America and then Europe, thanks to the hard work of Pak Herman. The culture of Sunda is one of the things that Pak Herman taught.
The Padepokan Pencak Silat Suwanda Academy is located in Suntenjaya, Lembang, West Java, and was built thanks to the hard work of Pak Herman. Steve Hunting helped him make this project come true. The Padepokan is owned by an individual person or school, which is the first of its kind in West Java. It is the best padepokan in Jakarta.
There are only a few schools that have a semi-indoor/ outdoor training hall downstairs and living accommodations upstairs. There is a valley with a river running through it and it is located in an agricultural area with mountains. The air is cool and refreshing. It is a peaceful day and night. It is a great place to get away from modern life to concentrate on learning.
The training center for Mande Muda in Indonesia has become the Suwanda Academy Padepokan. In order to give his students from around the world a chance to experience the culture of Java, Pak Herman held camps in Indonesia each year. He taught and guided tours to historical places, including some in Central Java.
Almost all plans and dreams can be created, but not only humans have a plan, and God decided on the 21st of March 2000 that Pak Herman would be killed in a car accident in Germany, just as he was expanding Pencak Silat Mande Muda in Europe.
Mande Muda has been guided by two generations and both have succeeded in their mission to develop and expand the fighting arts and culture of Indonesia.

My father kicked me out of training because it was a hard art and only men were allowed to practice it. I hid and learned from my father, who practiced in secret, because I like challenges. My father finally let me practice with him after he saw that I practiced seriously.
I began to compete when I was 14 years old. I was a champion in Kembangan and Olahraga. I became an active member of the organization. I developed the Pencak Silat Mande Muda program in Indonesia after my father died and my brother moved to the US. I studied with other pendekars while learning from my family. Dadang Gunawan was one of my father’s best students.
I was selected by my family and the Pencak Silat Mande Muda organization in Indonesia to be the third leader of Pencak Silat Mande Muda International.
I would like to thank Kathy Ohara who helped me with my first seminars in the US and all of the students of my brother who helped me and promoted Mande Muda in Indonesia, the US and Europe.
Besar Dadang Gunawan.
Ibu Rita Suwanda is married to pak Dadang. Pencak Silat has a rich and diverse education. He learned Pencak Silat from his father when he was eight years old. He began to study Rikesan and Usik at the age of 10. At the age of twelve, pak Dadang continued his training with pak Suherman. Dadang studied Maenpo from the renowned instructor. Maenpo focuses on self-defense and effective combat techniques. Cikalong, Usik, Rikesan, Timbangan, Benjang, Syahbandar, Sera, Liliwatan, Ulin Pa Macan, and other typical West Java weapon styles have been trained by Pak Dadang.
At the age of 17, Pak Dadang became a student of Pencak Silat Mande Muda. He studied Cimande and other styles under the founder of PSMM. Dadang became a Pencak Silat champion in 1969 after competing in a tournament. He was part of a delegation of competitors. He won the National level competition in East Java.
The Pencak Silat Mande Muda organization had a more important role played by Dadang. He worked with other members of the organization to update the practice methods of Pencak Silat Mande Muda. Indonesians are becoming more aware of the use of belt ranks in martial arts. It was easier to teach large groups of students with belt ranks. The principle was applied to Mande Muda in Indonesia and a curriculum was developed with five levels: (Sabuk Hitam, Hijau, Merah, Putih and Kuning)
Dadang, Uyuh and Suwanda traveled to the United States in 1985. They received a certificate of appreciation from the government of San Francisco.
The title of deputy was given to pak Dadang in 1990. In 2000, he became the Guru Besar of Mande Muda Indonesia, a title that he shares with his wife, Ibu Rita Suwanda.
His skill has made him well known in West Java and martial artists throughout Indonesia recognize him as a Pendekar, a title reserved for the highest caliber of Silat Masters.
