In this lesson, you will learn three Rev. Davis arrangements. The tour de force in concert was by Rev. Gary Davis. This is a showcase of Rev. Davis’s playing and arranging skills and is played in the Key of F and C. Rev. Davis explored the Key of F with religious and pop standards. The atmosphere of the 1920s is captured in the arrangement Darktown Strutters Ball. Rev. Davis used to tell his students that playing a game was cheating. This technique is combined with an Open D6 tuning to create an unusual boogie piano sound.
The right hand picking and left hand fingerings that were unique to Rev. Davis were shown to you by Ernie Hawkins. You can easily follow the instructions with the tab/music booklet. You can study the movements of each hand in split screen segments where each section is played slowly. We have included audio performances of Rev. Davis playing each song.
The titles include Soldiers March, Darktown Strutters Ball and Whistlin’ Blues.
