Because our connection to everyone means that our suffering is ours, we need to do this. Some of the points made nibble around the edges of important insights, such as that we have evolved to be cooperative as well as competitive.

The speaker with the most clearly opposed to scientific understanding is the environmentalist and progressive political commentator. He provides the overall narrative.

An animal is not a machine because a machine can be taken apart and put back together. The argument neglects facts about life and technology that explain the perceived difference. Taking simple life forms apart and putting them back together is what we are going to do. It may be difficult to take a thing apart without damaging it. Life is to be put together, but not to be torn apart. This is also true of cellphones. The heart-lung machine used during heart transplants is similar to the machine used in construction.

Tom decided to abandon material success as his primary life goal and devote his time to making a more meaningful social contribution. We agree that American culture emphasizes individualism and competition to such a degree that it becomes harmful to happiness, and we are glad that he has found meaning in life and a sense of connection.

This is an engaging and touching story, and the voice of Tom Shadyac speaks mostly about his personal experience. Roger Ebert said that the film is often absurd and never less than giddy, but that is not to say it is bad. At the end, I liked Tom Shadyac a lot. The construction of this theme on a fringe of science means that we can’t really consider this film.
