One of the main people to regulate shotokan karate into a system was Master Masatoshi Nakayama. The Japan karate Association (JKA) was formed in 1949 by Master Nakayama and Master Funakoshi. One of the reasons karate spread across the world was because of the instructor training program created by Master Nakayama.

The senior sensei that graduated from the instructor training program is a legend in the world of shotokan karate. Hirokazu Kanazawa is a Phenomenal Sensei.

The success of the instructors was guaranteed because of their high standard. Many of the supreme martial artists were located in different countries, where they organised and built organizations that were affiliated with the JKA. The Bruce Lee craze was sweeping the world, combined with the quality of the JKA instructors, shotokan karate exploded at a phenomenal rate.

The whole shotokan world respects and looks up to the legacy created by the JKA. The Japan Karate Association is still very strong today, with instructors all over the world, thousands of shotokan dojo, millions of members and a karate standard that stays very high, across the world.

After master Nakayamas death in 1987, thejkA split and has continued to split into ever smaller groups, but the originaljkA still remains very strong, with the Honbu dojo being located in Koraku, Bunkyo-ku, in the centre of downtown. Millions of shotokan karate-ka are practicing throughout the world thanks to Master Funakoshi, Master Nakayama and the Japan Karate Association. I am no longer a member of the JKA, but I still see them as the guiding light in shotokan karate.
