Things that will generate immediate cash are the ones to skip. Why? It becomes a lot more real when you make money for the first time. You are on track to making it happen, even if you are just experiencing it as a dream or hope.

Get it in front of a potential customer by creating something. You can create a brochure if you want to help people with their taxes. If you want to do arts and crafts, make something and post it. If you want to start writing, you can send a posterous email to all your friends and ask them to subscribe and share it.

The old cliche of do what you love and the money will follow, should actually read, share what you love and the money will follow. Sharing what you love is what brings value into the world. I think you should focus on what you are passionate about and how you can share that with the world.

What is missing in your life? What are you looking for that you can’t find? That is how Restoration Hardware began. Someone who had a need couldn’t find what they were looking for. It can be both goods and services.

For 20 years, I was self employed. Being comfortable with uncertainty is the first thing you need to do. Being self employed doesn’t mean you know where the next few checks are coming from. To deal with this, you need to be honest with yourself. I didn’t know where my money was coming from in twenty years of self employment. I did the work, persisted and it worked out, but the anxiety never left. It’s usually not accepted by your partner, children, family, friends and bankers.

Do you want to be self-employed or do you want to own a business? There is a big difference. The right way for individual people is either way. If you are creating a system where a product is being provided for customers, and you are the one who manages the system, then you are a solo individual providing a service.

I don’t recommend you dig into yourself and follow your heart. You need to create a business that will meet your financial needs and reward you with all the benefits of self-employment. It is possible to create a business around your skills and interests, but at the end of the day it is still a business and must be treated as such. You need your work and you need your hobbies.

My thoughts.

I have been self-employed for most of my adult life. It wasn’t always a strategic process, but most of what I’ve learned in 15 years of working for myself can be reduced to a few simple concepts.

I need to figure out what I can offer that other people will buy. This interaction has everything to do with it. Is it possible to create something that is both desirable and compelling?

Which web host should I use? What is an RSS feed? How do I accept online payments? When learning about self-employment, the questions are not what you should focus on.

A while back, I made a short video. You can always figure out technical things. It is a great resource when you are not sure what to do. There is no website that will tell you what kind of business you should run.

Instead, ask your own questions.

Answering these questions and thinking carefully about what to offer the world are the first steps you should take. You can tackle the next steps of figuring out how to create a business model around the answers, how to craft an offer from your business model, how to get the word out about your offering, and everything else.

I am off to Nauru.

I am going to fly to Australia this morning. There is a country called Nauru. The world’s smallest republic. My first visit down under was disrupted due to a visa problem. We are planning a whole tour down this way later in the year, and I am happy to finally get to Nauru.

The world’s smallest republic is not known for high-speed internet access, so I’ll keep comments off this post and we’ll resume them later in the week when I’m back on the mainland.
