There is a stream of charged particles ejected from the upper atmosphere of the Sun. The electrons and protons have energies between 10 and 100 keV. The temperature and speed of the particles change over time. The high temperature of the corona and the high energy of the particles allow them to escape the Sun’s gravity. The particles are hit by the Lorentz force when the solar wind approaches a planet with a magnetic field. The magnetosphere causes particles to travel around the planet rather than bombarding it. The magnetosphere is shaped like a hemisphere on the side facing the Sun, and then drawn out in a wake on the other side.

Without the protection of the Earth’s magnetosphere, life could not survive.

Changes in the geomagnetic field can affect biological systems. Human biological systems may respond to fluctuations in the field.

A storm in the Earth’s magnetosphere is called a geomagnetic storm. A geomagnetic storm is caused by a solar wind shock wave and cloud of magnetic field which strikes the Earth 3 days after the event. Depending on the activity of the Sun, the solar wind pressure on the magnetosphere and the solar wind magnetic field will change. The electric currents in the ionosphere are affected by the solar wind pressure and the Earth’s magnetic field.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT GEOMAGNETIC STORMS?

Changes in the geomagnetic field can affect biological systems. Human biological systems may respond to fluctuations in the field.

Communication systems use the ionosphere to reflect radio signals. Damage to communications satellites can disrupt non-terrestrial telephone, television, radio, and Internet links.

In a study for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Anna Krivelyova and Cesare Robotti found a connection between geomagnetic storms and stock market performance. A large body of psychological research has shown that people’s moods are related to their risk perception.
