I want to show you how to make it better. I didn’t realize the importance of online personal brands until a few things happened. I want you to understand why digital brands are so important.

Story #1:

I met a guy named Dave at a party. My friend introduced us and said, Dave, meetVanessa. Meet Dave. He is looking for a girl. You have to hook him up with someone you know. I was excited to meet Dave and set him up because I have a passion for matching people up. I was convinced that there was a misunderstanding after a few minutes. How could this guy be single? He said he couldn’t get a date because he was online. I asked him to pull up his profile so I could look at it. His profile was not the same as the guy standing in front of me. He wasn’t getting dates because the pictures were misleading, his little video was inauthentic and I knew why. He had an easy-to- fix Digital Branding Problem.

Story #2:

Entrepreneurs are often helped with their pitches by the Science of People. One woman was trying to raise money for a campaign. She had a product that could help a lot of people. She started taking sales on her website in April of last year. No one was buying. She asked us to look at her website and video. I read about her amazing product in an email before I looked at her online assets. I was shocked when I clicked on her website. She had a great idea, but her website, sales page and video left a lot to be desired. She was not getting sales. She had a great business. Digital branding is a big problem.

Story #3:

A few weeks later, I attended a tech conference and heard a speaker speak on a panel. He stole the stage from the other particpants during his 30 minute panel. The audience was blown away by the tools and web applications he shared. He had a line of 10 people dying to talk to him after Q&A. The Vice President of the major sports brand was sitting next to me. She said she would do anything to get this guy on the tech team. I wonder if he would consider changing jobs. She might be able to get his email if she searches for him on the internet. She turned her laptop towards me with a horrified look. She pointed to his personal website and said, I can’t believe this is the same guy! He does brilliant work for his companies, but hasn’t applied it to his own stuff. His website was disorganized and barren. Very, very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very The person on stage was different. The VP told me that he wanted people who were above average in all areas of their brand. His brand rubs off on us. He had a problem with digital branding.

What do these stories tell us? There are some myths about digital branding.

• Myth: If I don’t own a business, I don’t need to worry about my personal brand.
• Myth: A Facebook page doesn’t count as a digital brand.
• Myth: My business model speaks for itself. I don’t need to worry about online positioning.
• Myth: What I say on my profile or website is more important than the visual cues.
