Boccara takes a careful approach in defining what it means for a system to be complex, and at the same time addresses the equally elusive concept of emergent properties. The book presents a collection of model systems commonly referred to as complex. It starts with a definition of the systems and how to build a model to describe them. Differential and recurrence equations, chaos, and agent-based models are some of the models devoted to in the subsequent chapters. A number of exercises and their solutions are included in the book. Topics to be presented in a lecture on dynamics of complex systems can be found here. I have been looking for a book on this topic for a long time and I think this is one of the best.

Bocara has written a self-contained textbook that covers topics from basic mathematics to agent-based models. The book is full of examples and good problems and would make an excellent textbook for advanced undergraduates. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about complex systems. The Modeling Complex Systems is full of useful knowledge. There are a lot of examples that mix classical and up-to-date models. First- or second-year physics graduate students who have had a one-semester course in modern statistical mechanics are the ideal audience for the book. The book is clear and worth a read. Modern Complex Systems is the standard introductory textbook to the physics of complex systems. The February 2005 edition of Physics Today was written by Cosma Shalizi.

This nice book can serve as an introduction to modeling complex systems, but it can also be used as a general presentation and as a reference book for anyone wanting to find in a single book on complex systems simultaneously models, modeling tools, examples, theoretical results and interesting applications.
