He gives a background on how he looks at the markets and how it meshes with who he is as a person and how his systems work. Being able to think about the market in multiple timeframes helps his overall trading and helps him have a better understanding of what the market is doing. He defines what the market is doing in a way that allows him to classify it. Ken has a different market type classification that can provide students with an interesting contrast.

Ken talks about how systems that need to make adjustments to their positions just once a year can beat the market over time. He wants the students in the workshop to divide a pool of equity into several asset classes and see how their allocation compares with the market performance overall. Ken has some unique advantages. Instead of screening thousands of stocks, he watches about 25 index-oriented ETFs which can be managed like stocks. He is able to take positions in global offerings because of the breadth of the products. The ETFs price behavior allows him to participate in moves when they are rising but also allows him to stay in cash when they are falling. He blends the two time periods for a ranking. Those with some movement over the longer period help confirm that they are in a longer-term trend. The ranking method is easy to calculate and only needs to be done once a month or a quarter. It would take less than an hour for someone to look up prices and rank them using a pencil, paper, and calculator.

Ken spends the last part of the course on this system because it has the best performance for a longer term system that he has been able to find. He makes sure everyone knows how the system works and how he has adapted various ideas to craft the rules. He is able to provide a personal perspective on running it because he has traded the system and manages his own money with it. Ken does not plan to teach the Core Trading Systems in a live workshop format for at least the next year or two. Do these systems work for investors outside the US?

Ken relies heavily on Exchange Traded Funds traded on US exchanges. The concepts underlying why the systems work do not require specific instruments. It is easy for US investors to execute the systems. Any broad-based index, large-cap equity, and multiple asset classes are likely to apply to the system concepts they enjoy.

Ken’s systems can be implemented by someone outside the US. One option is to open an account at a broker that allows buying and selling exchange traded funds. The second option is to adapt the system rules to your markets with exchange traded funds or other trading instruments.

I’ve never actively managed my investments. This course will tell me how to do it.

No. Though you don’t need to be highly experienced in investing or trading to use the systems, this course assumes students have done or understand how to accomplish a number of tasks related to active investing. Even though experienced traders and money managers will benefit from Ken’s innovative thinking, we would probably label this course as an advanced introductory level course. To be able to gain from the course, someone would need to know how to buy and sell equities, how to find daily prices for ETFs, how to calculate a moving average, and understand a number of investment and trading skills. Good trading is supported by mathematical abilities as well.

Do the Core systems do well in bear market conditions?

Reducing exposure to equities during a bear is a way to achieve out performance. Even in bear markets, some of the systems find positions in alternative asset classes. Portfolio construction shows how you can add asset classes that will do well in bear markets.
