There is anxiety associated with entrepreneurial activity. I wouldn’t have admitted it at the time but it made me very sad to see those pictures. I was happy that my friends were doing well, but I was bitter and angry at the same time. They were dentists because they took the safe route. They had followed the path before them. They punched their hours after taking their orders, and now they were on the verge of having it all.
It seemed easy for them, and they were happy with their lot. I was taking on all this risk, but not reaping the rewards I had hoped for.
It is more difficult than you thought. I was an inventor. There was no pay cheque, no holiday cover, and no path to follow. I started out in business because I couldn’t take orders anymore. I was filled with jealousy for my friends the dentists, my friends the accountants, and my friends the corporate climbers. It all seemed easy for them.
They were not asking about meaning and purpose. Expectations of more than just the daily grind gave them peace and happiness in the nine to five. It seemed that way.
I liked the simplicity and certainty.
I remembered why I couldn’t live that life. That’s what Wendell Berry sums it up as well.
Love the annual raise. It is possible to take a vacation with pay. Want more? Everything is ready-made. Be afraid. To know your neighbors and to die.

I stayed on the course. I was at my business. Things got more complicated.

Our education system subscribes to the same philosophy, which is worrying. The whole system is a hang-over from an Industrial era, designed to prepare children to be good workers. Without committing the sin of thinking out of turn, they could play their part in the assembly line.
The world of business and marketing education has the same problem. It serves itself more than we do. It teaches one-size-fits-all systems and tactics, and when it comes to helping business owners make real and lasting progress towards true success and fulfilment, it is not fit for purpose.
The mass of information teaches you to follow the system and to steal and deploy. They are not telling you to think for yourself. No one is helping you to think of yourself as the most rare of skills.
I want you to think for yourself. I want you to think like yourself. There is only one way to find fulfilment and success. No one else can tell you what is best for your business.
If you don’t know what to do to take your business to the next level, that’s great. It is good if you are confused about the best way forward. It shows you are thinking for yourself.

The rule of six. The Rule of Six was created by Walter Murch, a renowned film editor who was responsible for movies like The Godfather Part II and Part III.
At film school, the first thing they teach you is how to maintain three-dimensional continuity. It’s important to make sure where people are in a room is consistent across different shots and camera angles.
They teach more technical principles. They don’t touch on the importance of making edits that advance the story and are true to the emotion of the moment.
To be a great filmmaker, you must change the film school approach. According to Murch’s Rule of Six, emotion is the most important thing when making an edit. It won’t work if a cut doesn’t remain true to the emotion of the moment
Advancing the story is the most important thing. Almost 80% of what contributes to a successful edit is emotion and story. The remaining 4 items in the rule of six only count for 20% of the success. Technical stuff is what they focus on in editing classes.
It’s the same when it comes to marketing. When it comes to creating a long-term successful business and fulfilling work, the last thing on the list is systems and strategies. The technical stuff can only make up 20% of the result.
When I stopped focusing on new techniques and tactics, and got the more fundamental pieces aligned, my sales shot up.
