Most retailers make one of the three mistakes when they approach acquisition.

I became fed up after a year of plowing money into every traffic idea imaginable. I thought about acquisition. I realized that. There are two components to new customer acquisition.
- Traffic and
- Conversion
You have to drive traffic to your site. The traffic needs to be converted into customers.
That’s it.
I realized that I had been following #1 and ignoring #2.
Increasing the number of conversions from traffic. The conversion rate can be improved. Acquisition is also improved by CRO.
And. Increasing the number of conversions. It’s more appealing than that. The driver is driving traffic. .
- First, it’s powerful. Increase your conversion rate 30%? You’ve increased your revenue 30%. And that 30% increase is par for the course if you haven’t done much CRO already.
- Second, it’s much cheaper than driving traffic. It usually involves tweaks to your own web presence as opposed to throwing money at ads.
CRO is a small hinge that swings big doors. Your traffic efforts will improve tomorrow if you improve your conversion rate today.
There are two wrong ways to improve your conversion rate.
The wrong way is to repeat the mistakes. You don’t want to engage in one-off tests or try every hack under the sun.

My “Conversion Playbook”
The idea of a Conversion Playbook was developed at my store.
My way of improving conversion rates was represented by it.
I used a variety of techniques to create a conversion mousetrap. I was able to convert a non-buyer into a first-time buyer with this mousetrap.
I systematized it after I integrated everything. I put the pieces in place myself.
Marketing automation was at its best.

Potential buyers visit my site for the first time at the upper left. I want an immediate conversion.
If the potential buyer doesn’t buy, I try to get her into an email sequence and push for a conversion.
I try to get her to buy via on-site offers if she doesn’t opt-in.
I use remarketing and custom landing pages if she doesn’t engage there. There is a last-ditch effort to convert her into a buyer.
There was a boom. The conversion rate doubled at my store in 2005. I have refined it at over ten retailers.
- It increased the conversion rate 30% at Karmaloop.com
- It increased conversions 40% at Artstar.com
- It increased conversions at TRNK, Poler Stuff, Linksoul, and others.
The Conversion Playbook was implemented at a $100m online retailer.
