This is a description.

An explosion of knowledge about how experience shapes the central nervous system and the formation of the self has accompanied the study of psychological trauma. We have learned that most experience is processed on a subcortical level. Insight and understanding can’t affect the operation of the subcortical processes. There is a need for therapeutic methods that don’t rely solely on understanding and cognitive skills when dealing with people who have been traumatised. The workshop will address how people’s brains, minds and bodies respond to traumatic experiences, and will specifically address the use of affect modulation techniques, EMDR, yoga, theater, and neurofeedback in overcoming various aspects of the destabilization and disintegration caused by trauma.

The educational objectives are listed.

1. Describe three new approaches in the treatment of trauma.
2. Describe the differences between how ordinary memories are stored contrasted with the memory processing of traumatic experiences.
3. List the theories on why “re-played” events are sometimes worse than the original traumatic event.
