We were not far from dirt floors when we were growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina. The apartment we lived in was built in the 1940s. There was an oil-burning furnace in the center of the apartment. There wasn’t a central heat. You left the door open if you wanted heat. There were metal cabinets in the kitchen and brown tile on the floor. Air conditioning was on.
Our dining table was actually a card table with a sunken belly. We used S&H Green Stamps to buy folding metal chairs.
The stamps used to be given with the purchases of groceries. My job was to lick and stick the stamps into books so we could redeem them for furniture.
A metal card table for dining, macaroni and cheese for dinner and no hope for a better life … I knew I had to make a change.
I didn’t realize we were poor. I knew we didn’t have a lot of money. The meals were not fancy. We ate a lot of TV dinners. My mother was a wonderful person, but she had no money skills. Money was made to be spent. She borrowed it from a local loan shark. She was haunted by bill collectors.
I realized that I wouldn’t have a better life, if I didn’t do something different – something dramatically different. I remember thinking,
“If it is to be, it is up to me!”

Banks don’t want you to have too much property. I became the bank. I don’t have to go to a bank.
