Karsten Delap – Essential Self-Rescue for Climbers

There is no need to end every climbing emergency with a helicopter rescue. Karsten Delap, an AMGA-certified rock and Alpine guide, search-and-rescue team member, and wilderness EMT, will teach you essential self-rescue skills you can practice safely at home, in the gym, or at the crag. You will become a responsible climbing partner, which will allow you to think more quickly, be more efficient, and effectively respond to climbing accidents. You fall to your training when you rise to the occasion.

You will learn the basics at your own pace. You will learn rescue skills like taking over a top belay, how to ascend the rope to your partner if he’s been injured, and proper tandem belay and rappel techniques. Delap will show you how to master critical knots and hitches, as well as teach you how to use various belay devices in a self-rescue situation. In the event that a rope jams, your climbing partner takes a catastrophic lead fall, or you encounter any other climbing situations, you will learn how to deploy self-rescue tactics. The course will teach you how to think critically and act safely in an emergency, so you are prepared with a variety of possible action plans and not scrambling in the moment.
